The elderly Nonnars, Molly and Hank are even more frail following a botched genetic-cleansing process that was supposed to leave them with near-perfect bodies and minds. Their physically-deformed, yet intellectually superior clones, who have taken on the identities of “Henry” and “Manuela” are improving at an astonishing rate. Meanwhile, each of the four’s emotional reactions to their situation is all over the map, some are reacting with stoic logic, or zen-like optimism, while others are terribly resentful and defeated.
When Lina, Dr. Kallose’s sister, whose severe disabilities inspired the process in the first place, meets the Nonnars, everyone’s relationships are thrown into flux, and it is unclear what everyone’s motivations are, or if everyone will survive.
Ezra Claytan Daniels weaves a complex tale of inter-personal relationships, scientific ethics, and questions about what makes us human.
