Great Ape! Cara Bean’s abstract autobiographical comic series, Gorilla Year is back for a third issue! Through three short stories that vary in style and mood, Cara explores her identity through the lens of gorillas.
In “Silverback” Cara explores issues with authority as a high school art teacher, a comic that could find itself very comfortable in her other autobiographical series, Ms Bean’s Art Class. Cara and her younger self, and herself as a caged gorilla deal with perspective, and the dangers connected to our obsession with our digital lives. Finally, channelling E.C. Segar, Cara hams it up while flipping gender roles as an Olive Oyl rescuing the guy from gorillas in “Oofty Magoofty.”
Gorilla Year is still a complex comic about dealing with life’s challenges, open to many re-readings and different interpretations. Cara’s figure work and comfort with drawing is on full display with tons of stunningly beautiful pages!
