When we last left Herman the Manatee, he had been thrown into prison for postering without a permit. In prison he makes two friends, Lester, who was arrested for hating himself, and Knuckles, a narwhal arrested for murder. Most of this issue surrounds a prison break, and an attempt to go on the lam.
This is the first instance of long-running reoccurring characters besides Herman himself. The addition of a supporting cast allows Herman to grow as a character, and widens the Jason Viola’s options for jokes and subject matter.
“This is a damned fine comic book, and people who enjoy damned fine comic books should go out and spend some money on it.”

“Viola’s Herman comics are perfect examples of high-class, low-budget self-published mini comics.”
