Melissa Mendes’ grandfather, John Albert Ridgeway wrote a short autobiography at the end of his life. It chronicled a long life of hard work, and inspired Melissa’s minicomic series, The Weight.
In issue seven -which Melissa considers the end of the series’ first book- Edie’s grandfather, Leland, is on a mission to retrieve his daughter, Marian from her abusive marriage to Ray. Expectations are shattered, tragedy strikes, and the family becomes smaller and more reliant on each other.
The Weight has been a powerful and moving series from its first issue, but Melissa’s storytelling is so sharp in this issue. Continued is Melissa’s focus on the tiny details in life that evoke so much information about a time, place, or feeling. As the concluding chapter in this first act, Melissa ties in moments and themes that were started in previous issues with haunting perfection.
