Description
In Lookout Station, by Kit Anderson, Oak is a fire lookout alone in a distant forest, with only the station’s computer—in the form of a shape-shifting holographic companion animal—to keep them company. Old memories, intrusive thoughts, and potentially even hallucinations are distracting them from their work, and potentially revealing a hidden truth!
Imaginative and dream-like, Kit’s quick read leaves lingering feelings of doubt.
This story is included in Kit’s collection, Safer Places, from Avery Hill.

Wowed. Picked it up because I liked the protagonist and the atmosphere, and it was so much more than that. Scifi storytelling happened via each element — elements like scattered leaf backgrounds — potentially aesthetic choices in other comics. Upon re-read, the tone is soaked into every panel (which I did re-read. multiple times). The profound human ache for connection when it’s just not possible. Not with the choices we’ve made.
