Description
In the third issue of Ellen Lindner’s exploration of the history of gender rebellion in American Baseball, Lost Diamonds, we visit milestones between the 1930’s and 1950’s. During the great depression and World War II, AFAB ball players carved out spaces for themselves in the sport, but also faced increased discrimination and outright bans on participating.
The bulk of this issue’s history is told through the life of Toni “Tomboy” Stone, a Black slugger who wasn’t allowed in the white’s-only All American Girls Professional Softball/Baseball Leagues, and instead made her way through racially segregated Black teams.
