My Beast, My Friend by King Ray is a poetic minicomic about a friend breakup that fluxes between whimsical and tragic. The narrator of the comic remembers moments of great joy they shared with a friend, as well as the emotionally trying moments. Ultimately the friend turns on the narrator, and they are left alone with a sense of loss.
King’s storytelling is larger than life, which makes the ultimate collapse of the friendship in the comic all the more devastating. King weaves in cultural references, and mysterious creatures to give the comic a depth that illustrates close friendships so well.
