Description

Matt Wiegle’s cover story, The Orphan Baiter may be my favorite movie of all time. I’m not saying it’s the best comic ever written, but it is so good, I’ve had to assign it a favorite in several other categories in my life, including breakfast cereal and toothpaste.

In a relentlessly funny story, ne’er-do-well playboy, Augustus Whelp, has been almost completely written out of his father’s will. His birthright, a large estate & menagerie, has been given to his nemesis Abraham Bailey. In a stroke of drunken genius, Augustus uses the empty lot he inherited, and a newly adopted ward, to make back his fortune. His new attraction encourages attendees to buy food, and throw it at the orphan, disguised as an insulting minotaur. But what happens when Bailey challenges the name-calling beast with his own mechanical barb-slinger?

This issue of Papercutter is backed up a deceptively elegant slacker comic by Tim Root with a beautiful two-page “splash page” that involves four explosions: one from a gun, the second where the bullet strikes its victim, the third from a can pierced by the bullet, and the fourth, the victim farting in what one can only assume is a natural response to getting shot.

Jonas Madden-Connor finishes up the issue with the depiction and aftermath of a boxing champ losing a match to a much better up-and-comer.

Nate Beaty provides gorgeous end pages as usual.
