Jason Viola
Jason Viola is the author of the popular webcomic, Herman The Manatee – which ran online from 2008 to 2012. His comics often focus on phenomena of the natural world -marine life, cellular science, botany- and how they reflect modern society which, despite all our efforts, is still also a phenomenon of the natural world.
Jason has spent years honing his craft of mixing storytelling with jokemaking. Most of his comics are structured in a daily comic strip format with punchlines, sarcastic asides, visual jokes and puns. But through these goofball iterations on a premise, stories emerge, characters develop, and larger ideas of society are investigated. Jason’s skills don’t only lay in comedy, though. His comics, Fear of Flowers and Rabbit Shadows are quiet, beautifully rendered meditations on mortality and creativity respectively.
Apparently men’s lifestyle publications, like Alarm & FHM Estonia dig Jason’s work a lot. That’s weird.
