In collaboration with singer/songwriter, Jenny Owen Youngs, Isabella Rotman has brought a standard in 20th century folk music to pictorial life in her comic, Long Black Veil.
As in many folk songs, the protagonist has found true love in a partner they can not be with, and of course murder, an execution and witchcraft are not far behind.
The song, Long Black Veil, is best known sung by the likes of Johnny Cash and Mick Jagger for the Chieftains. But Isabella knew it as a song she and the matriarchs of her family sang together during family gatherings. Isabella recruited Jenny Owen Youngs to cover the song for this comic (you can watch the comic to the song on Jenny’s website), and turned the often-male protagonist into a woman, and upped the supernatural origins of the song.
In the spirit of folk music and family sing-a-longs, Isabella and Jenny have included their adapted lyrics and chords in the back of the comic!
