Browse collects portraits of typical visitors to the bookstore where Mike Centeno works. Like his comics, Mike claims the portraits are not of real people. But just like his comics, the “fictional” aspects of his renderings are thin masks stretched over the truth. Having worked in the same position at the same bookstore, I pointed to a number of the denizens in this zine and said “I recognize that person!”
Along with each rendering is a short note about the customer, “Great hair, they bought a postcard or something,” “Out of towner. Browsed,” adding an extra dimension to each character. What is also revealed is how few folks bought something, and how little they bought. Support your local bookstores, folks!
