Description
Miranda Harmon shares a last name with Dan Harmon, creator of the cult-favorite TV show, Community, and the popular podcast Harmontown, in which he and his co-hosts improvise a conversation, and create a community with their listeners. Deep in the morass of college, and having fallen into a deep depression, Harmontown, and podcasts like it became a life-line for Miranda; a connection to a community without the threat of social anxiety.
When Miranda’s parents try to help, inviting her to travel across California with them, the stars align, and Miranda is able to drag her parents to a taping of Harmontown. What’s more, Miranda is invited on stage and finds herself contemplating her identity at the epicenter of a beloved community.
This comic is filled with some heavy themes of depression, and questioning of one’s self. Miranda’s charming drawings disarm us, and open us up to experience the extreme emotions she is feeling in the story. Her shaky lines buzz with the anxiety, and butterflies swirl in the pit of our stomachs as we root for her on stage at the podcast recording. This is a healthy bite of amazing art and a powerful story of how we navigate our selves in a world of social anxiety and social networks.
