Description
In Uncoiling, Yoko O.K. investigates 150 years of her paternal family’s history. The comic’s main venue is a talk show in which Yoko brings deceased family members back to talk about the life of her legendary great-grandfather Nakajiro, and his relationship with his family. His story is full of near-death adventure, romance, trickery, and ultimately incarceration along with 120,000 fellow Japanese-Americans during World War II.
Yoko’s comic is an intricate retelling that weaves between family stories, metaphorical scenes, and personal reflections. Yoko is assisted by a deep treasure trove of documents, diaries, and books written by her family. Yoko connects them all masterfully!
