Description
Becoming a Dog Person is Donna Almendrala’s debut graphic novel about adopting a rescue dog named Max, and how he turns Kristen’s life upside down. In this original graphic novel, Kristen is entering into a whirlwind of new beginnings: she and her husband Will have just moved into a new home, she’s starting a new role at a creative studio, and they’re about to adopt a dog with hopes of filling their familiar routine with the excitement of a cute and cuddly companion. Unfortunately, adjusting to life with this dog is like walking on eggshells as Max immediately takes to Kristen and aggressively guards her from Will, disrupting the harmony of the household. Laid-back, and generally unassuming, Kristen doesn’t have any experience training dogs, especially reactive rescues. She hires a dog trainer to work with Max’s issues, but it doesn’t seem to work nor does it feel right. Through her journey of getting to know Max, she learns what it means to have confidence, set boundaries, and build relationships when it comes to her career, her marriage and her sense of self. This is a story about how Kristen became a dog person.
Becoming a Dog Person is intended for animal lovers, especially those who have adopted a rescue, who know how that bond can change you for good. Whether or not you like dogs, it’s also a story for those who struggle to be seen in their careers or their relationships. While light-hearted and humorous, this story explores the various ways our human and animal bonds can fulfill us, overwhelm us and help us grow.
