Fine by Mike Centeno is a dreamlike letter to his late grandmother about the love and support she showed him growing up. Told rhythmically one panel per page, the comic is based on a song Mike wrote for her. Mike uses his grandmother’s home in Caracas -where he spent the majority of his childhood- as a centering force in his adult life a reminder of good when his internal demons get loud. He hopes in her death, his grandmother finds the same level of comfort she provided him as a child and in his memory of her as an adult.
Mike’s single-panel storytelling draws immersively into his comic, so we witness as he does as a child both the loving moments, and abusive clashes in his extended family. We are repeatedly pulled in and out of dreamlike memories to great effect.
