Description
KCN No. 1 by Evelyn Perez documents Evelyn’s deteriorating vision, starting at the end of 2018, to her diagnosis of keratoconus at the end of 2019. When Evelyn’s vision changed dramatically three times within a year, she knew something was up. In addition to dealing with this new health issue, she also had to deal with a kafkaesque journey through doctors offices and insurance paperwork!
The subject matter of KCN could easily lead to hopelessness, loss of vision mixed with a lack of care from those who are trusted to provide it, but a lot of Evelyn’s storytelling has a dry humor to it. Evelyn doesn’t shy away from using cartooning’s more comedic devices, such as sweat-beads and emanata. Evelyn’s depiction of the actual vision loss is innovative and helps the reader relate to her struggles.
