In King Ray’s minicomic, Phonestoned, Gayladriel is confronted with shifting cases of what seem to be mistaken identity. As they go about their day, and through the constant companionship of their phone, Gayladriel has to navigate a relationship they have no recollection of, a celebrity status they are unaware of, and a draining bank account.
Drawn in the first-person, and taking cues from video game missions, King’s comic plays with how we increasingly interact with the world through our phones. Text messages, app alerts, and social media posts have as much real estate in Phonestoned as face-to-face interactions. Surreal and disorienting, King’s comic feels simultaneously like a dream and all too real!
