Dave Ortega’s comics have primarily focused on the history of Mexico, about war’s effects on citizens, and about colonialism. Poor Mexico collects sketches based on research for his comics and other projects between 2011 and 2015.
In this zine, Dave mixes views from notable white men from Europe and the United States and images of Mexicans facing tough labor conditions and poverty. Dave’s drawings start cartoonish and sarcastic, as he documents men who are sure they know what is best for Mexico, while the end of the zine take a sincere look at the effects these colonial stances cause, and how we could react to them.
