Description
When Dave Ortega’s abuela, Consuelo, was a teenager her family lived where Texas, New Mexico and Mexico met, along the Rio Grande. In this short comic, Dave paints a portrait of the family’s life, and the many interactions the family and region had with the river. Consuelo would cross the river for work, while others, seeking a new life would try to enter the United States without authorization, and others would use the river to sneak contraband in.
Originally drawn for a comics exhibition, “River Stories,” this comic captures a few snap shots of life for Consuelo’s family in the intimate manner we’ve come to expect from Dave’s regular series, Dias De Consuelo.
