Introducing Radiator Comics Studio

We are excited to announce the launch of Radiator Comics Studio, a series of online programming and publications to highlight, support, and grow the cartooning community in South Florida.

Our first oline program, Nuts & Bolts, starts June 16. Each session will feature presentations and discussions by local comics writers and artists about how they tackle specific aspects of their cartooning process. Detailed practical explanations of writing, drawing, and publication practices will demystify comics for aspiring cartoonists, and act as a venue for an exchange of techniques among peers.

Nuts & Bolts will be broadcast live on Zoom.
Sessions will be recorded and archived on YouTube.

In addition to Nuts & Bolts, Radiator Comics will host Open Studio every Friday from 4:00 – 6:00pm EDT starting this Friday, June 12th on Zoom. This virtual drop-in work session is designed to allow community members to dedicate time to working on their comics. Open Studio will be structured into four 20-minute quiet work sessions on the hour and half-hour, with 10-minute breaks in between for socializing.

Programming will expand in July with new interview programming and hands-on workshops for making comics, and will continue to grow throughout 2020.

Later this year, Radiator Comics Studio will publish several issues of Spiny Orb Weaver, an arts journal in which Neil Brideau will interview local cartoonists about their work, and commission new works by them.

In May, Neil worked with Jamila Rowser from Black Josei Press to co-edit and co-publish Sun and Sand Comic Anthology, a free showcase of ten comics by South Florida cartoonists. Originally scheduled for Free Comic Book Day, a free printed version will be distributed around South Florida later this year when it’s safe for folks to visit shops regularly.

You can read Sun and Sand digitally either online or on a PDF at https://sunsandcomics.wordpress.com.

Radiator Comics Studio is made possible through a Knight Arts Challenge Award from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Spiny Orb Weaver is funded by by The Ellies, Miami’s visual arts award, presented by Oolite Arts.
