Description
Through a fluid recollection of events in her life, Cathy Hannah grapples with what it means to be an adult in modern America in her minicomic series, Alas. In her 30’s, Cathy feels like she should have “being an adult” figured out by now, but she sees her failings more easily than her successes. She can’t find a steady job, or a steady relationship, and can’t figure out how her peers have figured it out. Different story lines ebb and flow into each other in this ongoing, complex, and emotional autobiographical comic.
In this issue, Cathy’s dad received two purple hearts for his injuries in the Vietnam War. He’d always wanted to be a Marine. Cathy grew up during the first Gulf War, believing the good guys always won in war, god made sure of it. As an adult, Cathy watches the Iraq War on television, and is sick to her stomach. Cathy is unsure of her place in the world, and that jerk Descartes isn’t helping.
The different threads of Cathy’s comic bleed and smash into each other like memories, bouncing around from moment to moment. A very honest and challenging first issue!
