Cat by Numbers collects diary comics by Catalina Rufín from late spring to mid-summer 2020. In these vignettes of Catalina’s life, we witness how they navigate the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic: work shuts down, previously normal activities feel surreal, and navigating relationships and friendships when human contact can be dangerous becomes very complicated.
A striking and effective choice in Catalina’s colorful diary comics is the conspicuous absence of dates on most of the entries. This lack of specificity perfectly illustrates the way time has become far more fluid when daily schedules have become so disrupted. How much time has passed between entries? Minutes? Days? Who can tell anymore?
