Description

Second Form by Ingrid Pierre tells the story of Diwata, a young woman navigating social expectations, trauma, and an abusive family. In this world, a natural transition in life is when one develops their “Second Form,” a mythical state of being, sprouting wings, or horns, or growing to ten feet tall. For women, their Second Form often manifests after childbirth. Diwata has yet to take on her Second Form, which leaves her feeling vulnerable and unsafe around so many transformed people when she just wants to live her life her way. As Diwata attempts to make a life for herself, her mother’s imposing rules and powerful grip begin to tighten around her. What secrets are being hidden from her? Who can she trust?

Ingrid folds Filipino mythology and folklore into this modern story. Her use of color is particularly striking as she packs so much into this emotionally charged story.
