Description
In Secret Black Woman: American Virtues, Ingrid Pierre confronts memories of her father—with whom she is now estranged—and the twisted political state of the U.S. we find ourselves in. The comic moves between personal and public, from the death of Ingrid’s Haitian grandmother, to Ingrid’s conflicted feelings about doing emotionless work immigration services, to her father’s role as an immigration officer, to the actions of ICE in Minneapolis and across the country to her building a family of her own.
There are frightening parallels between Ingrid’s relationship with a government that is violent toward its citizens and residents, and her relationship with her father. Ingrid doesn’t shy away from difficult stories and complex emotions in this sharp, smart critique of power, abusive relationships, and a system that we are all complicit in and victims of.
